VR

NewClear is a short comedic and interactive narrative VR experience where you assume the role of a new hire on their first day, at the tail end of their job orientation.

The disembodied voice of your Supervisor helps guide you through a nuclear meltdown crisis that's triggered either by your action or your inaction, whichever comes first. Players are encouraged to interact with a series of blinking buttons on a panel, one of which will avert the crisis, but only after all of the others are pressed at least once. The winning button is determined randomly each time the game is played, so it is never in the same spot twice.

Loosely inspired by the tone and style of games made by Crows Crows Crows (The Stanley Parable, Accounting VR, etc.), and the opening of Portal 2, we wanted to subvert player expectations by using a constant stream of one-way narration. Furthermore, we made it so that the only way to communicate back was by interacting with the environment, often triggering surprising or unexpected events.

NOTE: This game was developed for a college course focusing on VR game design and development. Unfortunately, for the second half of its development, the covid-19 pandemic restricted our access to VR equipment (HTC Vive) provided by the college. As a result, we continued developing the game remotely, without a VR unit to test, making it slower to iterate and thus resulting in a game that, while complete, does not feature several planned features and gameplay elements.
